In very little time whatsoever, Blaise found himself not only outranked, but ordered to organise and lead the scratch force of troops to friendly lines. It appeared that a Colonel and his entire regimental command staff had been captured. Blaise smiled as he remembered the promised medals and other rewards he was going to be recommended for by the colonel. This will most certainly help my career. Might even get a bloody promotion. Major Maximillian does sound good.

It felt good to be doing something other than running. He could see how the members of his original squad carried themselves with more pride now. They were more hunter than hunted. The prisoners too had regained their sense of purpose, small groups of them moving off to find others and lead them to friendly lines as well, whilst the rest took what they could from the piles of equipment.

Blaise wondered over to where the German NCO was still sat. Bloody good shots those, he thought as he looked at the two bullet holes in the man's chest. They were less than an inch apart, thick blood congealing as flies clustered all over it. Leaning forward he parted the man's lips, a pair of pincers in one hand.

'Gotcha.' Blaise carefully grasped the gold tooth he had seen earlier when he claimed the NCO with a pair of pliers and yanked it out with practiced efficiency. Dropping it into a small pouch he carried for just that sort of thing, he rifled the man's pockets, tossing letters and photographs of loved ones to the ground, keeping the tobacco, small hip flask and anything else he thought he could sell.

Man's got to save for the future, he thought, chuckling at the thought of actually living to see the end of the war. Placing his still bloody fingers in his mouth, he gave a sharp whistle, signalling it was time to move out. Rifle at the ready, Hero of the Empire, Captain Blaise Maximillian led his people to safety.
